A enral amma – a Tamil book

A while ago, I created this pdf e-book in my native language of Tamil. I’ve been frustrated with books that teach children the Tamil letters, only offering the letters with words that might even be unfamiliar to modern children.

I also know that music is a great way to remember things. So here it is – A enraal Amma (A means Mother), a love letter to mothers and children, a catchy song to help kids memorize the Tamil alphabet, and an e-book to read along together. The blue pages are for kids, the purple for the other (or a sibling!) to read, and the green to read together. There’s also text in transliterated English and Tamil (similar to my other book, Chintu kaanome).

I hope little ones and parents will enjoy this little story and song.

For those who don’t know or understand Tamil, here’s a rough translation of the text:

– A enraal Amma, Amma inge va va – A means Amma (Mother), Amma come here
– Aa vandhu aadu, vilayaada va va – Aa come and aadu (dance), come play with me
– I idho, idho irukkene – I idho (here!), here I am
– Ee eera kanneer thudaippene – Ee I’ll dry your eera (wet) tears
– U udane odi varuvaayaa nee – U will you udane (immediately) run and come to me?
– Oo oonjalil aadalaamaa – Oo can we swing on the oonjal (swing)?
– E edhu venum solluviya – E while you tell me edhu (which one) you want?
– Ey eri madiyil varuvaya – Ey will you eri (climb up) on my lap?
– Ai aiyyayyo enga pona nee – Ay ayyayyo (oh no!) where did you go?
– O oru nimidam theduvene – O let me search for you for one (oru) minute

– Ow owvai aanaalum un amma – Ow even if I get old (owvai) I’ll be your Amma

Download here, and listen to the song here. I hope you enjoy it.
