Loving Kindness

For February, I have been exploring the paramita or perfection of Loving Kindness – this is also known as metta in Pali, and maitri in Sanskrit. Here is a coloring page for you as a reminder or poster or just to be mindful. I recommend sending kind wishes to those who are suffering while you color.

Metta has the quality of loving, but more like friendliness. Ancient monks are said to have likened it to seeing an old beloved friend after a long time.

Maitri is related also to the word "mitra" (Sanskrit) or "mitta" (Pali) – which means friend.

Perfections have near and far enemies. For metta, the near enemy is attachment, the far enemy is anger. In some ways, far enemies are easier to content with: you can notice and pay attention to and make efforts against anger, but attachment is more subtle. How do you cultivate friendliness and love towards someone without becoming attached to them? How can you wish them well but let them be free themselves?

A song to inspire is Maitreem Bhajata by MS Subbulakshmi, translation here:
