Book: Essential Labor

Essential Labor by Andrea Garbes is a nonfiction book, a guide to mothering and being our full selves, but it reads like a biography, as this Filipina author talks about mothering for social change.

This book was delicious, especially in the the audio book format read by the author, describing

culture, the joys of food, body image, sexual satisfaction, raising kids AND parents, so much about "mothering" (which isn’t just moms, or even just woman-identifying people), nature, and lots more!

I also learned so much about myself in this reading – my own unfulfilled needs, biases, and places of growth.

She talks about 10 trillion dollars of unpaid work being done every day – and mostly by women, and mentions an unpaid labor calculator, a similar (free) version of which is here: https://qz.com/work/1083411/this-calculator-makes-the-unpaid-work-women-do-visible

This book brings together caring for others, for our little (and big) people, for ourselves, and the issues of social justice and making a better world.
