How long is the present? This second right…now? Or this particular millisecond? What would you guess?
Researcher Daniel Stern’s studies suggest that our present moment is experienced as about 3-4 seconds. That means that when we say, “I’m doing this right now,” we mean that period of time, about 1-10 seconds (3-4 seconds is the average), that surrounds when we say that.
With 3 seconds, that means the second just past, the second we experience, and the second right after. This is our now, this is our present, and that is all we are – and maybe can be – present for.
